December already!

So I woke up yesterday and wondered where the majority of the year went... Who else did?

Anyway, various things have happened!

I obtained lots of books! Well, not loads. But enough for my To Read box to be totally full again...
Things I have now!
--Caitlin Moran's Moranthology from the library. I loved How to Be A Woman and Moran's writing style, and this is just as good!
--Ellie James' Broken Illusions from the publishers. I enjoyed Shattered Dreams a bit and, have hopes for this one now that I know the characters and the setting!
--Neil Gaiman's and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens, and Stephen Chbosky's Perks of Being a Wallflower, from the shops. I've read them both before, but thought becasue I loved them so much, I should own them.
-- J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit, also from the shops. I really need to get round to reading this, and hopefully before seeing the film.
So I now have a not a huge pile of books to read, but a pile of books that will not fit in my box. Yay!

A. E. Rought brought out a trailer for Broken!

I really like its use of pictures and no dialogue, just pretty music. The review of this book will come soon!

Miraink brought out its list of top ten bloggers! Congrats to the people who made it, and good luck with the next round!!

I was on the internet today and I found this! Better Book Titles, for various Halloweeny books. Fun times!

I totally failed NaNoWriMo. I think I'm better suited for the "write when you actually have something to say, and don't care that it takes forever" method. I did manage 8k though, and I'm still blaming a lot of it on textiles coursework and the impossibility of it.

Congrats to everyone who did win Nano, who did get through to round to of Blogink, and to everyone who's generally done something good this week :)

• The Queen of Teen shortlist has been announced. And for the first time, a male author has been put up! Congrats to James Dawson, whose book I loved in extreme proportions. I’m definitely voting for him. Go vote for whoever you think should win. But if you can't decide, vote for James!
• Disney bought the rights to The Graveyard Book (Neil Gaiman). I really should re-read that. I didn't enjoy it for Carnegie, and then it won. So... Anyway, I'll definitely see the film.

Here’s what’s going on around the book-y world!

• Voltaire now (if you’re reading this on or after 1st April 2012) has rights to his two books, What is Goth? and Paint It Black. And he might have them out in print. And he will almost certainly have them as ebooks. I’M SO EXCITED I CAN’T WAIT. Yeah, I realise some of you might not know who he is. He’s one of my favourite musicians, who also does a whole tonne of other stuff. And I discovered him a couple of years ago and his books were either out of print, or out of my budget. Forgotten which. Unavailable. So, when he put in his new Nooseletter he should have it out some day. YAY!!!
• Johnny Duddle won the Waterstones Children’s  Book Prize! And Liz Pichon won for middle grade stuff, and Jenny Downham won for teenagers. Yay!
• Lots of stuff about The Hunger Games. Apparently, it’s too gory for its 12A rating. Er, hello? There was hardly any. And some say it’s too disturbing. Guys, can’t you read? It was in the description. The whole concept is teenagers fighting to the death. No like-go watch something else! 
• And, even worse. Racist comments floating around. “Why are Rue and Thresh dark?” And worse. Story here. READ THE BOOK. I think Rue and Thresh were brilliantly cast, and brilliantly played. Congrats to Amandla for taking it all so well.
• And on a nicer note, the Carnegie 2012 shortlist is out! We covered it here.

First, cover reveal! Maureen Johnson put on Tumblr a few nights ago the cover to book 2 in The Shades of London book.  I love it...I'm not sure what it's about exactly, but I enjoyed book 1, so I really want to read this.

Wow, that’s a really good premises. Love the idea and can’t wait to read this.

• I've given up book buying for Lent. With the exception of the week in France. I can buy any book in the French language that I want. And to make up for it, the week after Easter I won’t be buying anything either. I also won’t be making my library buy anything during this time either. Go me. Not that I’ll be short of stuff to read. *looks at kindle and pile on shelf*

Weekly Round-up #6

It’s been a fairly slow week in terms of getting stuff...but considering my TBR pile, I think that’s a good thing. I was quite well behaved in the library. Which had tonnes of stuff I quite wanted. So I didn’t get ANYTHING! And so the only thing I got this week was a pretty review copy of Forgiven by Jana Oliver, from the  publishers.

And in terms of things that have been happening....

•  It’s been announced that there will be a fourth in the Demon Trappers series! It's called Foretold, it will be here in August (not long!)  and it already has a pretty cover! 
• The giveaway's still open! Enter to win Witchblood by Emma Mills-it's a great book for anyone who likes romance and vampires-and let's face it, who doesn't in some form or another?
• Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (the film) has a trailer! I'm definitely excited about the film, and can't wait to see it. And I definitely need to get hold of the book sometime soon.You can see the trailer here.
• There's a Goodreads contest to win Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver (What is it with authors with the surname Oliver today?). It's US only, but to any of you out there, why not have a go?
• There's a whole group of kindle books (UK), such as Vamplayers by Rusty Fischer, a prequel to Halflings (review of Halflings coming soon)  by Heather Burch, Demon Girl by Penelope Fletcher,  that are FREE! 
• I had a go at updating the design. I think it looks a bit cleaner, and a little easier to read. Tell me what you think. 
• It's BIRTHDAY WEEK.  Well, not exactly. Raimy's blog  turned one a few weeks ago, (I forgot to mention it, but the giveaway's still open-find it here), Cait's will turn one on Tuesday and Death Books and Tea will turn on on Thursday! And finally, there's my library stash. Which was originally just Ashes, by Isla J Bick. And then I went to Winchester Discovery Centre. And I just had to pick up Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday,  Intertwined by Gena Showalter, and Crossing Overr by Anna Kendall. Well, I didn't have to. I did.

I think we can safely say, I won't be bored this half term.

The blog tour for Witchblood by Emma Mills is coming by on Tuesday (aka Valentines Day. But we don't celebrate that here), so expect a review and a giveaway!

Strange Chemistry have signed Jonathan L Howard! Katya's World looks really interesting....

I got my book club hooked on Goodreads! Well, just the librarian and The Squeaky One, but still....now they know! And my librarian is campaigning to get Goodreads accessible from school.... I can see that working. Not.

I have a poll up in the top left hand corner. It's about what I should be posting, because I sometimes get totally stuck for ideas. So, if you could please just tell me what you want to be seeing here, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Weekly Round-up #4

Sorry for disappearing! Long chats to a certain internet provider *cough* Talk Talk *cough* about how terrible our service is really puts me off blogging, or anything to do with the internet that involves actual work. So, here’s what I got this week...

  --The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. I finished reading it, and am now very glad my parents are English.
--Psyren vol 1 by Toshiaki Iwashiro. It looked interesting when I read about it in Neo (a magazine), and then I found it in the library, and so I picked it up! Not started it, but.... oh well.

And news...

Weekly round-up #3

It’s been a rather slow week in terms of...everything. Aside from homework. Got quite a lot of that. The next week might be kind of slow in terms of reviews and things getting posted. But I’ll try.

And I don’t think much has really been going on in the blogging world either... but Strange Chemistry are holding an Open Door month, with more details to be found here... Larissa from The Howling Turtle is holding a Hunger Games read-along, which looks like fun...and because Amazon's terms are too restrictive, Goodreads needs your help rescuing their books. If not enough data is provided from sites other than Amazon, the books' data will be deleted. For many books, this is fine. But if you tend to read obscure books, books published first in other countries, or by small name publishers, then go take a look, because there might be a few books they miss.

Weekly update #2

First things first, I’m sorry about the completely unplanned hiatus! A mix of Sherlock, school-work, and laziness meant I didn’t post anything all week. But I did do some reading! And I got a lot of good books...and I had a good trip in London!

So... what I got this week...

• Freshman Year and Other Unnatural Disasters by Meredith Zeitlin, for review. Thank you,  Anne Walls and G.P. Putnam’s and Sons. It’s not what I normally read, but still. I am trying to expand my  reading tastes (emphasis on the trying) and so... Let’s see if I like this!
• Professor Moriarty: Hound of the D'Urbervilles by Kim Newman. Forbidden Planet is a very bad place for me. As well as being the only place I have seen Anna Dressed in Blood, Dragonswood  and many other books actually in print in England, whenever I go, I come out with a small bag of books, less money and a much bigger to-read list. Well, when I saw this I thought "literary mash up? Awesome. Must read". And so I got it.
• Switched by Amanda Hocking. I didn't actually know she was signing, but I went in and there was a customer announcement "Amanda Hocking is signing at 1 o clock!". Cue my frantically searching for my dad and feeding the parking machine (those things are ridiculously expensive) so I could be there. Oh, and I found Ana from The Book Smugglers there too.

       

• A hug from Amanda Hocking. I love hugs. What can I say?

I think I did well.

And in news....

• YA imprint of Angry Robot (my favourite publishers who I swear only publish stuff I enjoy) Strange Chemistry have their first two authors! Kim Curran and Shift and Sean Cummings and Poltergeeks have been signed. Both books look great. More info here.
• We blacked out in a Sopa protest. Sopa could be a big deal if it passes, and we should do what we can to stop it. I understand that people have lost a lot of money from illegal downloads, but censoring the web is not the answer. 
• Scott Westerfeld's The Manual of Aeronautics has a cover!  Pretty? I think so.
